Famous for its chewy, freshly cooked shiratama (glutinous rice dumplings), this is a traditional Japanese sweets shop in Asakusa, Tokyo, known for its exquisite honey. ●First visit on August 20, 2024. I went without a reservation and was seated after a short wait of about 10 minutes (second in line). ~Order Details~ 🔸Mitsu Shiratama (5 pieces) - Zunda (Cold) ¥980 🔸Summer Strawberry Shaved Ice ¥1,700 Shiratama Set (3 pieces) - Black Sesame Kinako (Cold) ¥500 ~Review~ The menu is incredibly confusing. The paper menu outside is very basic. What are the "five types" referring to? They should reconsider the menu from the perspective of a first-time customer. Inside, you order using a touch panel. It seems like it should be easy with pictures, but it's still difficult... Specifically: 🔹When you choose the Shiratama Set and proceed, the additional topping list inexplicably includes Shiratama again. 🔹It seems you can't order two items at once. 🔹You need to check "Issue Receipt" to get a receipt. I probably should have just asked the staff about the unclear points, but it was all very confusing and ordering was quite tiring. The Shiratama were large, chewy, and delicious. The salt kelp served as a palate cleanser was also quite good. There was a notice inside saying that this kelp is sold at the register. The shaved ice gave me brain freeze, so it probably wasn't made with natural ice. The strawberry syrup tasted like pure strawberry jam! I know of more affordable and delicious shaved ice, so ¥1,700 for a non-specialty shop felt too expensive. I don't need the plum jelly, so I wish they would lower the set price accordingly. Overall, this wasn't a place I would actively want to revisit.
Located approximately 160 meters from Asakusa Station, a two-minute walk. I made a reservation using TableCheck (¥500 per person) and arrived at the restaurant at 11:00 AM on Sunday. After choosing whether to have the mitarashi shiratama (sweet dumplings) warm or cold, I was escorted to a seat on the second floor. I ordered two servings of mitarashi shiratama (three dumplings per serving), matcha (green tea), and water yokan (a type of jelly, matcha flavor) for a total of ¥2,000 x 2. For the mitarashi shiratama, I chose black sesame kinako (roasted soybean flour), anko (sweet red bean paste), mitarashi (sweet soy sauce glaze), and matcha an (matcha bean paste). The mitarashi was particularly delicious. I was recommended to add some shichimi (seven-spice blend) and, hesitantly, I tried it. The spice enhanced the sweetness of the filling, making the flavor even more pronounced. The shichimi used is from Yagenbori, a famous spice shop. There's a Yagenbori Shichimi Togarashi Honpo Metro store right next to the restaurant, and I couldn't resist buying some to take home. The second-floor seating was spacious and comfortable, and I was able to pay through TableCheck, which made things very convenient. Thank you for the delicious meal.
The shiratama dango (glutinous rice dumplings) were truly chewy and delicious! I ordered the matcha shiromitsu (white sesame) shiratama dango. 🍵 The black honey kinako (roasted soybean flour) also looked delicious! I was interested in the menu that allows you to try two different types of shiratama dango. The salt kelp for palate cleansing was very tasty! ✨ I was happy that they also served warm tea and agar-agar. You order by selecting the type of shiratama dango and toppings from a ticket machine. You can choose between warm and cold dango! I chose cold this time, so I'll try the warm ones next time I visit.
