I frequented Shibuya Hyakkendana around 1990. Back then, I often visited Chinese noodle restaurant Kiraku, Taiwanese restaurant Reikyo, and Indian restaurant Murughee. This time, I'm reviewing Murughee's curry. Stepping inside, I was greeted by a retro interior that felt like time had stood still. Of course, I ordered the Murughee curry with egg, spicy, and extra sauce. When the Murughee curry arrived with its mountain-like rice, I was filled with nostalgia. The rice was firm, which is necessary to create this shape. The moment I tasted the curry sauce, its unique, original spice aroma and flavor filled my mouth. This is exactly the taste that brought me back to Murughee. Before the curry, I ordered the Gad Gad salad with its signature peanut sauce and a nostalgic yogurt drink. It was delicious!
I visited for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. This long-established Indian curry restaurant is located in a small alleyway just off Shibuya Dogenzaka and has a long history. This time, I ordered the signature Egg Murgh Curry (¥1,200). The restaurant's signature mountain-like rice and the perfectly arranged boiled eggs on top of the curry made me excited to finally try it. The appearance is unique, but the taste is a classic, rich deliciousness. The chicken was nowhere to be seen, so it must have melted into the curry. The spiciness was quite intense, so if you don't like spicy food, I recommend adding ¥50 for a milder option.
Located a 4-minute walk from the West Exit of Shibuya Station on the Keio Inokashira Line, this retro-style cafe has been around since 1951. I love the Showa-era vibe. **Order:** * Egg Murgh Curry - ¥1,300 My order arrived within 3 minutes. This is their most popular dish, known for its mountain-sized portion of rice. Usually, adding spice to a curry comes with an extra charge, but here, even adding sweetness costs more. Since it was my first time, I decided to enjoy the original flavor. Apparently, the base curry is as spicy as a commercially available hot curry. I'm not a big fan of spicy food, so I asked for their homemade chutney. It's a sweet jam made with fruits and spices that's said to mellow out the flavor. The first bite was a revelation! The curry is made with carefully selected domestic ingredients (except for the spices), and the meticulous preparation is evident in the rich, flavorful sauce. Even for me, who usually eats medium-spicy curries, the egg and chutney did a great job of making it manageable. The flavors of the ingredients really came through, and it was delicious.
Tabelog 3.76, Selected as one of the Top 100 Curry Restaurants in 2024. This is delicious. A unique flavor that never gets old. It was described as spicy, but the spices don't linger in your mouth. It's an original curry that's different from both European-style and spice-based curries. The pickles are also delicious. I think this is one of the curries you have to try when you come to Tokyo.
