I visited "Rodas", a scone specialty store located in Ginza Mitsukoshi, directly connected to Ginza Station. It's on the B2 floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi. I arrived around 3 pm on a Sunday, and there were a few people in front of the store. I was able to check out quickly. I bought a plain clotted cream scone for 297 yen and a chocolate-cassis raisin scone for 297 yen. Both scones were buttery and moist, and they were delicious. I enjoyed them until the very last bite.
I purchased and took out some scones from the Ginza Mitsukoshi store. I got four seasonal scones, including plain, and a large serving of clotted cream. The scones are delicious when warmed in the oven and served with jam and clotted cream.
The scones here are delicious! They're the moist kind. You should split them in half by hand and warm them up in a toaster oven. Apparently, microwaving them is a no-no. Spread the jam on first and then dollop on the clotted cream. The best ratio is apparently equal parts jam and clotted cream. And don't stir the clotted cream, as it would ruin the lovely crust. This place is apparently an old-established British bakery.
Established in 1890 in Cornwall, southwest England, this is a long-standing scone specialty shop that I find myself craving regularly. Their only directly-operated stores in Japan are located in Ginza Mitsukoshi, Shinjuku Isetan, and Hankyu Umeda. Whenever I go to Ginza, I always end up stopping by. While many scones have a dry texture, I find that these scones have an exquisite balance of moisture. When warmed in a toaster, the outside becomes crispy, while the inside remains moist. The texture is smooth and truly delicious. Of course, the classic plain scone is great, but personally, I love the scone with Earl Grey tea blended in. The moment you take a bite, the rich aroma of the tea leaves fills your mouth. The clotted cream, essential for scones, is also excellent. They are committed to traditional methods using only fresh local milk. It's rich but not heavy, and I appreciate that the butter flavor isn't too strong. I'll definitely be back for more!
September 2023 This month's Earl Grey scones: Raisin ¥297 Pear and Apple ¥297 Clotted Cream ¥331 The scones were large and moist, so I split them and reheated them before eating. There was a booklet with recommendations, including a suggestion for "Cream Tea." Cream Tea is apparently a way to enjoy afternoon tea, consisting of a set of scones, clotted cream, jam, and milk tea. I calculated the calories and this set was over 1000kcal! (lol) I ate two scones and a whole cup of clotted cream in one sitting... Normally, one scone and half a cup of clotted cream might be just right. (lol) The clotted cream came with a cold pack and a cute non-woven bag, and the staff were very kind.
