I finally tried the famous Hayashi Rice at Maruzen Cafe. It's exactly what you'd imagine a Showa-era coffee shop to be like. The interior has a retro vibe. I'd known about it for years but never got around to visiting. The rich gravy is on the sweeter side. I also ordered waffles, but the batter was more like bread and didn't live up to its appearance. It's a matter of taste, though. The double cheesecake was a refreshing, light cheesecake with a lot of fresh cream.
This place is a hidden gem. It's tucked away in a hard-to-find location. I was surprised to find a cafe in such a serious-looking bookstore. ● Lemon Waffle / 1130 yen It was absolutely delicious! It was incredibly filling. I underestimated it. If you're looking for a hearty meal, I highly recommend the waffle menu! (Details: 2 waffles, lemon bavarois, rich ice cream, whipped cream, and lemon syrup) ● Apple Pie / 750 yen It was a modest slice, just the size I expected. The taste was delicious! ● Drink Set / 450 yen If you choose tea, it comes in a teapot. You get two servings for this price, which is great. Most of the cakes were sold out that day, so I reluctantly chose the waffle, but it was a great decision! I'm curious about the other menu items. I definitely want to come back again.
Before Maruzen was rebuilt, there was a shop on the rooftop building, and I was told it was the origin of Hayashi Rice. The new store is on the 3rd floor and has become a stylish restaurant. Even at 7 pm on a weekday, there weren't many customers, so I could eat in a relaxed atmosphere. It's not Hayashi Rice, but Hayashi Rice, and it's said that the founder of Maruzen, Hayash Yuteki, is the father of this dish. The taste is slightly sweet and very delicious. It goes perfectly with oysters.
If you're looking for a hidden gem cafe in Nihonbashi, look no further than Maruzen Cafe on the 3rd floor of Maruzen bookstore. It's surprisingly uncrowded even on weekends! Their signature Hayashi Rice is absolutely delicious. I was greedy and ordered the Omurice, but the white rice inside was a perfect match for the Hayashi sauce. The clam chowder is also rich and creamy, so I highly recommend ordering it as a set. It's also a great idea to buy a book from Maruzen and read it there!
This is supposedly the restaurant of Mr. Hayashi, the inventor of Hayashi rice or something like that. Anyway, thank you for thinking of me. I love Hayashi rice. It's just rice with gravy, so it comes out really fast. The plate is big, but the portion isn't that much, so the meal is quick. After the meal, I had a grapefruit juice, and the aftertaste of Mr. Hayashi's food was clean and refreshing. There was a nice-looking elderly gentleman sitting in front of me. He got a luxurious fruit parfait and looked so happy, like a child. I want to be like that old man. The taste of the Hayashi rice is just Hayashi rice. Is there any other kind of Hayashi rice? If I had to say, it tastes like Nihonbashi. Pork Hayashi Rice: 1580 yen
