I went there because I heard their katsu-don (breaded pork cutlet rice bowl) was highly recommended. I'm happy that it comes with lots of vegetables. The clam miso soup is also a welcome addition. The bite-sized cutlets are marinated in a rich sauce and piled high in the bowl, leaving me completely satisfied. It's a small shop, but the service is impeccable and I had a very pleasant time.
This is an old-fashioned Western-style restaurant established in 1912 (Meiji 45). The entrance curtain gives off a nice, local diner vibe. When I asked for recommendations, they suggested the special combination plate or the katsu-don. Looking at the photos, the katsu-don seemed particularly delicious, with a fried egg and sauteed vegetables on top of the pork cutlet. I decided to order the katsu-don. Breaking the fried egg slightly and mixing it with the cutlet, the special sauce added a delicious flavor.
A classic Western-style restaurant nestled in the heart of the city. They serve a comforting, sauce-based katsu-don with a generous helping of vegetables. The service was also pleasant, making for a delightful meal.
【Location】 About a 1-minute walk from A2 Exit, Ningyocho Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. 【Visit Time】 Weekend (Saturday) around 11:00 AM. 【Crowd】 It wasn't crowded since I arrived right when they opened, and I was able to get a table immediately. However, it was full by around 11:20 AM. It's best to come early. 【Order】 ◯ Special Assorted Fried Dishes (¥1,600) ◯ Clam Soup (¥100) 【Impression】 There was quite a bit of shared seating (two people at a four-person table, two people at a two-person table), which isn't exactly welcoming, but it's understandable considering the restaurant's profits. As mentioned above, the founder was a chef for Yamagata Aritomo, a retainer of the Choshu Domain. I wonder how many years it's been since the restaurant was founded... It has a pretty vintage atmosphere, almost like it's been around for ages. This restaurant is known for its katsudon (pork cutlet bowl), but I opted for the special assorted fried dishes today. It included five different types of fried food: cutlet, scallops, shrimp tempura, marlin, and more. Everything was crispy, the meat was thick, and I could taste the juiciness. Since the meal didn't come with soup, I ordered clam soup on the side, which was also very delicious. The broth was packed with umami, something that's hard to replicate at home. Thank you for the delicious meal today.
A venerable Western-style restaurant in Ningyocho, with a history exceeding 100 years. It's famous for its mysterious katsu-don, a creation of the first owner. If you're expecting a typical katsu-don, be warned that both the appearance and taste are completely different. It's not quite a sauce katsu-don either. With a cool, old-fashioned charm reminiscent of a 'town Chinese' restaurant, but for Western food, it's a place that requires a bit of waiting. However, it's highly recommended for those who want to savor the atmosphere and history.
